WASHINGTON- DC Soccer Club, D.C.’s largest youth soccer organization, has hired Eric Hoy as Director of Referees.
Eric Hoy has been a certified referee with the US Soccer Federation since 1981, handling youth, high school, adult, recreational, and travel games. He has handled over 3,000 games and expertly adapts to each game's new challenges and situations. From 1997 - 2003, Eric ran an adult recreational soccer league in Washington DC, and mentored dozens of referees to cover games. Some of those mentees are still covering matches, twenty years later.
Hoy has had the privilege of reffing and seeing excellent players, even national team players from just a few yards away. He takes a lot of pride in his work as a ref knowing the the players, coaches, and fans are relying on him to make the right calls, protect the players, and keep the game orderly and enjoyable. Hoy has worked with the DC Soccer Club for about ten years. His three high-school-aged children are all USSF-certified referees and players within the DC Soccer Club.
Hoy said, “There are many ways to enjoy soccer, whether you are a player, a coach, a fan, and/or a referee. I love attending professional matches at Audi Field, standing up and booing when the crowd wants something in our favor but does not get the call. But then I sit down, and 99 times out of 100 I concede that the official was right. Still, I want the home team to win!"
Hoy continued, "Look at our USA referee corps. At the Men's World Cup in Qatar, an American was the fourth official, and the three field referees were Americans at the Women's World Cup in Australia. That's huge progress on the international stage for our elite American referees. We have a wonderful, strong referee program in the USA, and I'm glad to play a small role. We are always looking for new officials, adults or youths aged 13 or older. Join us at DC Soccer Club.”
DC Soccer Club’s Recreational Soccer Director, Jane Dawber, said, “I am thrilled that Eric will join DCSC to take on this important role. His attention to detail and passion for building a base of Junior referees is critical for our Recreation program to excel. I am excited to be working alongside such an amazing person.”
DC Soccer Club’s Executive Director, Greg Andrulis, said, “We are thrilled that a dedicated, passionate, and committed member of the DC Soccer Club has decided to take on this important role. Eric Hoy has been an integral part of the DC Soccer Club as a parent, an advisor, and a referee for over 10 years. While we undertook an in-depth process to fill this position, when Eric expressed an interest it was clear to all of us involved in the process, that Eric Hoy is the perfect person to undertake this task. His qualifications and experience are exceptional, and his desire to grow the referee program with outreach to the community, especially with our young players are all prerequisites for the position he now holds. His commitment to the quality of the game, the players, and our families is a trait that will bode well for all members of the DC Soccer Club. Our appreciation to Jane Dawber, our Director of Recreation, and all of the members of the search committee for their important input and guidance through the process.”
