Washington Spirit to be integrated across DC Soccer Club’s programs as organizations collaborate to expand youth access and inspire the next generation of players

WASHINGTON, DC, April 22, 2026 — DC Soccer Club (DCSC) is proud to announce a landmark partnership with the Washington Spirit, marking the first collaboration of its kind between the Spirit and a youth soccer organization. Beginning this fall, the Washington Spirit will be integrated across DC Soccer Club’s programs — representing a visible and meaningful connection between the professional and youth game, and a shared commitment to expanding access and inspiring the next generation of players.

DC Soccer Club families have long been strong supporters of the Washington Spirit, consistently showing up in large numbers to cheer on DC’s hometown professional women’s team. In 2025, the Spirit recognized DC Soccer Club for outstanding community ticket sales and match-day attendance — a reflection of the club’s strong connection to the Spirit and shared commitment to growing the women’s game.

This partnership brings together two organizations deeply aligned in mission and values — both dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities for girls and boys to play, stay in the game, and see themselves reflected in the sport. DC Soccer Club has the largest girls’ participation in soccer in the city, and in the past year alone saw 12% growth in girls’ registration across its programs. The club has made strides in increasing access with free clinics for girls, and this partnership with the Spirit will accelerate those efforts by leveraging the power of a professional women’s soccer team as a source of inspiration and opportunity.

Jane Dawber, Director of Recreational Programs at DC Soccer Club — which serves thousands of young players across the District each season — emphasized the powerful message the partnership sends to young athletes.

DC Soccer Club (DCSC) has been accepted into the Girls Academy (GA) ASPIRE League beginning in the 2026–2027 season, marking a significant advancement for the club’s girls travel program and the continued elevation of its top-level teams.

WASHINGTON, DC, APRIL 10, 2026 — DC Soccer Club (DCSC) has been accepted into the Girls Academy (GA) ASPIRE League beginning in the 2026–2027 season, marking a significant advancement for the club’s girls travel program and the continued elevation of its top-level teams.

Beginning next fall, DCSC’s top girls teams within the Academy level of the Travel Program, U13–U19, will compete in GA ASPIRE — a structured, performance-based platform designed to elevate development and provide a clear pathway within the GA ecosystem.

DCSC Director of Soccer Matt Arrington, former DC United Academy Director of Coaching who has worked professionally in MLS and college soccer, emphasized the significance of this step and its alignment with the club’s philosophy.

“We are honored and excited to be accepted into Girls Academy ASPIRE. The core mission of the GA league focused on growing the female soccer player, as both an athlete and a person, is in total alignment with the values of DCSC. Not only will this league provide a competitive level of play as a part of a national platform across multiple age groups, but will better serve our players also participating with their high school teams. We are thrilled to make this the top tier of our player pathway for girls at DCSC.”

DCSC will compete in the Mid-Atlantic North Division against top clubs in the Maryland–Pennsylvania region, including Baltimore Armour, Baltimore Celtic, Coppermine SC, Huntington Valley AA, Keystone FC, LVU Rush, Potomac SA, and PPA.

The Girls Academy (GA) is one of the nation’s leading platforms for elite female player development. GA ASPIRE serves as its second tier, offering a merit-based structure that rewards performance, supports advancement, and connects regional competition with national exposure.

Competition will follow a fall-to-spring format aligned with the fall high school season, allowing players to balance school and club commitments while maintaining a high-level training and game environment. In addition to league play, players will participate in GA showcases and identification events, creating meaningful opportunities for collegiate exposure and advancement within the GA structure.

DCSC Executive Director Greg Andrulis highlighted the broader impact of the move. “This is an important milestone for DC Soccer Club and a reflection of the work that has gone into building a strong, values-driven girls program. DCSC Girls Director Ann Germain, a former USWNT player and Hall of Fame inductee with decades of youth coaching experience, underscored the direct benefit to players and the continued growth of the program.

Understanding ACL Injuries — and How to Reduce Risk

With ACL injuries continuing to make headlines, I was reminded of an article from last year that really stopped me in my tracks.
It highlighted a troubling trend that continues to impact athletes today.

At one point last year, Katie Lou Samuelson, a veteran WNBA player for the Seattle Storm, became the third athlete on her team to tear her ACL before the season even started.

And she’s not alone.

According to the American Journal of Sports Medicine, female athletes are 4 to 8 times more likely to tear their ACL than males in the same sport.

Even more surprising, 70% of these injuries are non-contact. No collisions, no tackles—just movement gone wrong.

But why is this happening?

Here’s the short version:

Anatomical differences like wider hips, muscle imbalances, and poor control during cutting, jumping, or landing all play a role. And unless these risks are addressed, the chances of an ACL tear remain high.

That’s where smart, targeted training and physical therapy come in.

While ACL injuries cannot be fully prevented, we can significantly reduce risk by:

Strengthening key muscles like glutes, hamstrings, and core
Improving landing and cutting mechanics through sport-specific drills
Using advanced force plate data to personalize each athlete’s program
Building not just strength, but speed and control under real-world conditions

WASHINGTON, DC. March 9, 2026 — DC Soccer Club (DCSC) is proud to announce that it has been accepted into MLS NEXT Academy Division beginning in the 2026–2027 season, marking a transformative milestone for the club’s Academy program and the continued elevation of elite player development in the District.

Beginning next fall, DCSC’s top Boys Academy teams, U13–U19, will compete in MLS NEXT Academy Division — part of the MLS NEXT platform widely regarded as the highest competitive youth soccer structure in the United States. The acceptance places DC Soccer Club among a select group of high-performing clubs competing under MLS NEXT’s national standards and development model.

DC Soccer Club will compete in the Virginia Region against top clubs including Loudoun Soccer, Alexandria SA, McLean Youth Soccer, FC Richmond, Springfield/South County Youth Club (SYC), The St. James, Virginia Revolution SC, and Virginia Rush (subject to annual league alignment).

Teams will participate in a structured 10-month season spanning fall through spring, including regional league play, MLS NEXT Cup Qualifiers in Virginia, and opportunities to compete in national MLS NEXT events such as MLS NEXT Fest. These events serve as high-level competitive platforms and important scouting environments for college, professional, and national team pathways.

DC Soccer Club Director of Soccer Matt Arrington, a former DC United Academy Director of Coaching who worked professionally in the MLS and college soccer, said the move reflects the club’s commitment to competing at the highest levels of youth soccer.

“This is an important and notable step forward in DC Soccer Club’s history. We’re the largest and longest-serving soccer club in Washington D.C. and we aspire to compete at the highest level possible,” Arrington said. “This move to MLS Next shows the progress that this club has made and we are proud to have a platform where we can offer the best opportunity in the country for boys to play at the collegiate and professional levels.”

DCSC Executive Director Greg Andrulis emphasized that the move to MLS NEXT reflects years of strategic planning and intentional leadership aimed at raising standards across the entire club.

“Joining MLS NEXT Academy Division is a significant affirmation of the direction we have chosen as a club,” Andrulis said. “We made a deliberate decision to raise our standards, invest in leadership, and build a pathway capable of competing at the national level. This milestone reflects the alignment of vision, strategy, and execution throughout our organization. Matt Arrington’s leadership has been instrumental in executing that plan and strengthening our Academy foundation. Over the past few years, Matt and his staff have worked tirelessly to chart the right path for our club. MLS NEXT is not the finish line — it is the next step in our mission to build something extraordinary,” Andrulis said.

DCSC’s Academy represents the highest level of play within the club’s Travel Program for elite players U11–U19. Beginning at U13, Academy teams will compete in MLS NEXT Academy Division. At the U11–U12 level, DCSC’s Pre-Academy teams will compete in NCSL, where many of the region’s leading clubs place their top teams at this stage of development.

The Club’s fiduciary tasked with approving major financial, management, and programing decisions;
A strategic planning body dedicated to achieving ambitious goals for DCSC’s Bigger, Better, Stronger future;
A source of support for the Club’s dedicated staff who manage its day-to-day operations; and
A conduit for openness and communication with DCSC’s families and other stakeholders.

Board members serve two-year terms and can serve a maximum of three consecutive terms.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: attending both regular and committee meetings and volunteering at and helping to plan Club events.

We are looking for board members who have a deep dedication to DCSC and a strong desire to support all that kids can gain through soccer. We encourage anyone eager to lead and help write the next chapter of community-centered youth soccer in DC to apply.

As a former soccer player , I remember the excitement of arriving at the field for practice or a game, putting on cleats, jogging, playing some Rondo, and finishing with a few dynamic stretches. Honestly, that’s a solid warm-up. And if a player is also strength training regularly outside of soccer, it’s usually enough.

The challenge is that many youth soccer players are busy. Between school, multiple teams, and other activities, finding time for two or three extra days of strength training each week can feel unrealistic. As a result, strength work often gets skipped altogether.

A practical solution is to build a small amount of strength training directly into the warm-up. Adding just 10 extra minutes before practice or games doesn’t replace full strength training, but it makes injury prevention far more achievable and more importantly, consistent.

COMMON SOCCER INJURIES AND HOW TO REDUCE RISK
Three of the most common injuries in youth soccer are groin strains, hamstring strains, and ACL tears. Below is a simple three-exercise series that targets the muscles involved and can be added directly into a warm-up.

1) Groin Injuries
The groin muscles connect the thigh to the pelvis and are heavily involved in side-to-side movements and stabilizing the plant leg when kicking. Groin injuries often occur during cutting or sudden changes of direction.

Exercise: Copenhagen Plank
This exercise strengthens the groin muscles and their attachment points.

- Can be done using a bench or bleacher with padding under the knee

- Or with a teammate supporting the leg

Perform 2 sets of 15–30 seconds. Start with the short lever version. Once you can confidently complete 2 sets of 30 seconds, progress to long lever and go back down to 15 seconds at a time

2) *ACL Injury Risk Reduction*

The ACL is a ligament that stabilizes the knee. An ACL tear often requires surgery and 9–12 months of rehabilitation, making risk reduction extremely important.

Strengthening the muscles around the knee, especially the quadriceps, helps improve knee stability during cutting and landing.

Exercise: Split Squat Isometric Hold

- Hold the bottom position of a split squat
- Perform 2 sets of 20–30 seconds per side

3) Hamstring Injuries
Hamstring strains commonly occur during sprinting. Strengthening the hamstrings helps prevent these strains and supports knee stability, which can also reduce ACL injury risk.

Exercise: Hamstring Bridge on Bench or Bleacher

- Start with both feet on the bench
- Perform 2 sets of 20–30 seconds
- Progress to single-leg when ready

DC Soccer Club Hosts German Federation Coaching Certification to Advance Coach Education

DC Soccer Club hosted a German Soccer Federation (DFB) coaching education certification at Washington International School’s campus, reinforcing the club’s commitment to investing in its coaches as a core pillar of player development.

February 4, 2026, Washington, DC - This past weekend, DC Soccer Club hosted a German Soccer Federation (DFB) coaching education certification at Washington International School’s campus, reinforcing the club’s commitment to investing in its coaches as a core pillar of player development.

In partnership with Global Soccer Development, the club welcomed DFB Coaching Education Instructor Maik Dzensla to lead the intensive three-day program, which blended classroom learning with live, on-field training. Nearly 40 coaches participated over the course of the weekend.

The certification was created and hosted by DC Soccer Club specifically to support the continued growth of its Travel coaching staff, and was offered at no cost as part of the club’s ongoing investment in professional development. In the spirit of collaboration and shared learning, DC Soccer Club also invited coaches from Washington Capital United and Washington International School to take part in the experience as partners.

“We’re grateful to Director of Soccer Matt Arrington for creating such a robust coaching education environment for our DCSC technical staff and our local partners,” said DCSC Executive Director, Greg Andrulis. “The German Federation Certificate was the culmination of a months-long series of six internal and external educational opportunities made available to our coaches since the start of the season. Investing in our staff strengthens our coaches’ ability to lead both on and off the field—and that impact is felt directly by our players. Thank you to all of the coaches who participated in the coaching education series—their dedication to learning and continuous improvement is exactly what makes our club stronger.”

Coach education is a critical component of DC Soccer Club’s long-term vision. As the game continues to evolve, ongoing learning ensures coaches are equipped with modern teaching methods, tactical understanding, and age-appropriate training approaches. That growth directly benefits players, as new ideas and best practices are applied daily on the training field.

Understanding that coaches learn best through real-world application, the course incorporated live training sessions featuring DC Soccer Club teams. Players from our U14, U15, and U16 Boys Academy participated throughout the weekend, allowing coaches to actively coach, receive feedback, and refine their approach in real time.

For Matt Arrington, DC Soccer Club’s Director of Soccer who coordinated the event, the course represented a major step forward in the club’s ongoing commitment to coach development:

“A big focus for this year has been on increasing coaching education and development within the club. Having the ability to bring in a coach educator from the German Soccer Federation (DFB) is an incredible opportunity for our coaching staff to hear a different voice, gain new ideas, be challenged in how they view the game, and learn the principles and methodology from a different country’s soccer federation. The more we can expose our coaches to educational opportunities and expand their coaching toolbox, the better the experience will be for the players at DCSC. The more our coaches know, the more they can transmit to players in training and in games. Coaching development is player development.”

Across the three days, coaches explored a progression of modern coaching themes led by Dzensla, including mastering fundamental actions, teaching effective runs into space, and understanding pressing lines and spatial organization as foundations for team structure and ball recovery. The curriculum reflected contemporary approaches used at the highest levels of the game, while remaining grounded in principles that translate directly to youth development.

The opportunity to learn from a German Federation instructor also provided a valuable global perspective on coaching education—something DC Soccer Club prioritizes as it continues to strengthen its technical culture.

DCSC Technical Director Edu de Souza, whose background includes years of experience as a coaching educator, welcomed the opportunity to expose coaches to a global approach to the game. ”In Germany, coaching is a way of life! Their methodical discipline and precise approach emphasizes attention to the small details. DCSC is open to learning from all cultures and ideas about soccer. We grow by learning from different ‘schools of soccer,’ and this past weekend gave us a valuable opportunity to experience the German methodology firsthand.”

All participating coaches received a certificate upon completion of the program, marking both the culmination of the weekend and the continuation of their development journey.

Connor Keenan, DCSC U16 Boys Red team coach and Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Catholic University, noted, "The entire weekend with our instructor, Maik, was such a unique and valuable experience. It allowed us to gain a better understanding within the fundamental methodology from the DFB. It was great to learn not only how such a soccer-rich country teaches the fundamentals in order to produce high-level players, but also how to create positive environments for players to get the most out of training."

“I really enjoyed how Coach Maik's perspective on the game and on how to run a training session,” added DCSC ECNL RL U17 and U19 Boys Coach and ECNL Manager Neill Ouska. “His passion was commendable, and he reminded me that being different is okay. You have to stay confident in yourself—even when your approach goes against the norm.”

DC Soccer Club extends its thanks to Global Soccer Development, Maik Dzensla, Washington International School, and all participating coaches and players who helped make the weekend a success. WASHINGTON, DC, OCTOBER 9, 2025 — DC Soccer Club is proud to announce that Mo Gueye has been named Tournament Director, leading the planning, organization, and growth of the club’s tournament operations. In this role, Gueye will oversee all aspects of event management, ensuring DC Soccer Club delivers high-quality, competitive, and community-centered tournaments that reflect the club’s mission and values.

Executive Director Greg Andrulis shared his excitement about the appointment: “As we continue to grow our tournament profile, we’re thrilled to have Mo lead this important area of the club. Mo is an experienced coach and business professional who is widely respected throughout the DC soccer community. His dedication to player development and passion for the game align perfectly with our core values of intention, inclusion, collaboration, and community.

Over the past two years, our tournament portfolio has expanded with the addition of the Len Oliver 5v5 and the Rec All-Star Cup, while the District Cup has become one of the region’s premier events. Mo’s leadership will help take these initiatives to new heights and open the door to exciting new opportunities.

We’re especially proud to have promoted from within for this role. My thanks go to Director of Soccer Matt Arrington and Technical Director Edu de Souza for their leadership and for helping to build a coaching team that represents the very best of DC Soccer Club.”

Technical Director Edu de Souza praised Gueye’s leadership within the club’s youth programming and said,“Mo provides excellent communication, strong leadership, and a commitment to player development. As an Age Group Director and head coach, he helps create a culture centered on fun, learning, and the values of honesty, integrity, and selflessness—leading to a successful and thriving environment.”

Gueye’s appointment reflects DC Soccer Club’s commitment to developing leaders who combine on-field expertise with organizational vision. Currently serving as the club’s Age Group Director for U8–U10 boys and head coach of the 2017 and 2016 boys Blue teams, Mo has strengthened foundational programming while mentoring coaches and aligning developmental standards across age groups.

A USSF B Licensed Coach, Gueye brings extensive experience leading teams at the professional, semi-professional, and youth levels. He has coached for Maryland Bobcats FC (2023–2025) at the professional level and currently serves as Head Coach for VA Marauders (USL League Two) and Bridgeport Soccer Club (UPSL Premier). In 2025, he led a team to the final of the Gothia Cup in Sweden, competing among 193 international teams—a testament to his ability to inspire teams on the global stage.

Beyond coaching, Gueye’s leadership extends into management and entrepreneurship. He has served as General Manager and Director of Finance at Maryland Bobcats FC, overseeing financial operations and strategic planning, and is Co-Owner and Vice President of Rise Academy de Dakar (Senegal), supporting more than 150 youth players in academic and athletic advancement. As Founder of Universal Soccer Consulting, he has also provided strategic guidance to youth, amateur, and professional soccer programs worldwide.

With a professional background in finance within the healthcare industry, Gueye combines organizational discipline with a passion for community-building through soccer—skills that will serve DC Soccer Club’s growing tournament operations well.

Speaking about his new role, Gueye said: “I’m truly excited about the opportunity to serve as Tournament Director for DC Soccer Club. This role represents a chance to build on the club’s strong foundation and create meaningful experiences for players, families, and partner clubs. My goal is to elevate our tournaments into not just competitive events, but celebrations of community, development, and the love of the game. WASHINGTON, DC, SEPTEMBER 8, 2025 — DC Soccer Club is proud to announce that Amin Hass has been named Travel Director to oversee the club’s expansive travel program. In this role, Hass will help guide the player development pathway by ensuring a high-quality, organized travel soccer experience, while also supporting and growing DCSC’s coaching staff and strengthening the club’s representation in leagues and tournaments.

Director of Soccer Matt Arrington is excited about the appointment and said, “I couldn’t be happier to have Amin step into the role of Travel Director. He has been exemplary not only in his coaching on the field, but also through his leadership in team management and communication. Amin has already helped us strengthen our operations by improving SOPs around video use and other coach and team processes. Having someone with his blend of coaching and administrative expertise in this position will not only make us more efficient, but also drive our continued growth as a club.”

This appointment also reflects DCSC’s commitment to cultivating leadership from within. Hass’s transition from a successful coach and analyst at the club into the Travel Director role highlights how DCSC invests in its people, providing opportunities to grow and take on greater leadership in service of our players and families.

Hass brings a unique blend of technical expertise, academic achievement and passion for youth development. He has coached in clubs around the DMV since 2017 and joined DC Soccer Club staff in spring of 2024. In addition to coaching DCSC’s U13 and U14 Blue teams, he has also served as the club’s Game Analyst. His coaching resume includes contributing to George Mason University’s Men’s Soccer program as a Game Analyst during its Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship run, and winning a state championship and USYS regional qualification with another youth club.

He holds a USSF B License and a US National Youth License, reflecting his commitment to coaching education and player development. Beyond the field, Hass brings exceptional academic expertise with a PhD in Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University and specialized credentials in performance and analytics, including Levels 1–3 Soccer Analyst certifications from the International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport (ISPAS) and a Soccer Analytics Certificate from Sports Management Worldwide.

His passion for the game is rooted in his upbringing in Khuzestan Province, Iran—a region often referred to as “little Brazil” for its deep soccer culture—where he played at both the collegiate and semi-professional levels before embarking on his coaching career.

Speaking about the opportunity, Hass said: “I’m incredibly honored to step into the Travel Director role at DC Soccer Club. This club has a rich history and a deep commitment to developing not just skilled athletes, but well-rounded individuals. My intention is to build upon this strong foundation by fostering an innovative, ‘development-first’ culture that provides unforgettable opportunities for our players and coaches both on and off the field.”

Ugorji has already made a significant impact within DCSC in the past four years coaching for the club. His leadership, dedication to player development, and ability to inspire coaches and players alike made him a natural choice for this elevated role. He was awarded the distinction of DC Soccer Club Boys Travel Coach of the Year for the 2024-2025 season at the club’s annual awards event in June.

Technical Director Edu de Souza underscored the importance of Ugorji’s new role: "Anthony Ugorji is a USSF B-licensed coach with the DCSC DNA. As a former player for the club reaching the NCAA Division I level as a player, he coached at all levels and brings the knowledge and passion for the game that truly translates to our players. We are excited to have Anthony as our new Boys Director!"

Director of Soccer Matt Arrington also praised Ugorji’s contributions to the club. “Anthony has proven himself to be a strong leader within our coaching staff and a positive influence on our players and families. His vision, values, and work ethic align perfectly with our club culture. Promoting Anthony recognizes the tremendous job he has already done here at DCSC, and we are excited to see him take the boys program to the next level,” said Arrington.

Currently holding a USSF B License, Ugorji brings over a decade of coaching experience. At DCSC, he began coaching the academy level teams in the 2024/2025 season while serving as an Age Group Director, where he helped implement the club’s game model and supported player and coach development.

In addition to his work at DCSC, Ugorji has coached for several years at the youth club, collegiate and professional levels. Collegiately, he worked as an assistant coach at UDC for two years, and professionally has coached with the Maryland Bobcats of the NISA league and the Virginia Marauders in USL League Two.

Beyond coaching, Ugorji has pursued advanced studies in athlete development and performance. He holds a Master’s degree in Physical Education and served as Director of Sports Performance at Redline Athletics, overseeing athlete training and development programs.

Born in Imo State, Nigeria, Ugorji relocated to Washington, D.C., at the age of seven and began his soccer journey locally. He played for DC Soccer Club from 2009–2011 before competing collegiately at Longwood University, where he captained the team during his final two seasons.

DC Soccer Club, Washington Spirit and Events DC Team Up to Host Youth Soccer Clinic at The Fields at RFK Campus

Washington, DC, JUNE 24, 2025 — DC Soccer Club and Washington Spirit are proud to announce a youth soccer clinic presented by Events DC on Sunday, August 17 , at The Fields at RFK Campus (401 Oklahoma Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002) from 9am-12pm . This event promises an exciting opportunity for young girls to train with top coaches and meet professional athletes, all while enjoying a memorable day of soccer with peers.

The clinic is open to girls aged U8 to U14 and is designed to offer high-quality training in a fun, inclusive environment. Registration is $50 per participant and includes:

DCSC Director of Soccer Matt Arrington Earns Prestigious Coaching License from French Football Federation

Washington, DC, November 10, 2024 -- DC Soccer Club is proud to announce Director of Soccer Matt Arrington has received the Elite Formation Coaching License (EFCL) in partnership with the French Football Federation. The EFCL is one of the most highly regarded and rigorous soccer coaching courses in the world, and has played a pivotal role in the development of Homegrown players and in the growth of coaches within MLS and MLS NEXT Pro.

Arrington was recommended and selected to the coaching course while he served as Director of Coaching at DC United Academy. Arrington joined DC Soccer Club this past May and finished the EFCL in August, with the 18-month course culminating in a week of training at the renowned Clairefontaine national training facility in France.

"The EFCL course is the most challenging and rewarding coaching license I've ever done. Spending nearly two years working alongside the best coaches in the MLS Academy system and MLS Next Pro pushed my professional standards higher and higher on a daily basis. The quality of work by my colleagues and learning under French Federation and national team staff gave me a perspective on analyzing, teaching, and understanding the game that I never had before. The knowledge gained from learning the French Football Federation's methodology for developing elite youth players is now being tied into how we design curriculum and teach our players at DCSC."

Arrington will continue to apply this experience and education to nurture the development of DC Soccer Coaches and players.

In Washington, D.C., there are 72,000 individuals experiencing food insecurity – and a fourth of these are children. In partnership with the DC Food Project , we are asking if you would consider donating to support the DC Food Project this month in honor of National Hunger Awareness.

Funding allows the DC Food Projec t to continue providing support to 70+ schools in the District and Northern Virginia. Your donation will help the DC Food Project stock school pantries and allow them to onboard additional schools, so students can access a broader range of necessities that include food and personal products on an as-needed basis.

Over the past few years, our club has proudly partnered with the DC Food Project by hosting donation drives to support school communities, volunteering to deliver donated food to schools, and donating soccer equipment to children throughout the city. About the DC Food Project
The DC Food Project was launched in 2018 by a group of DC area moms to help school children and their families get additional food during the school day and over the weekends when school meals are not available to them. The DC Food Project founders created a 501(c)(3) to fill what they refer to as "the gap" -- what happens when lunch is over? This gap has an impact on tens of thousands of students, with 1 in 5 children struggling with hunger in DC alone.

Since their inception six years ago, the DC Food Project has provided over 3.5 million meals to students, families and seniors through their various programs. The organization supports over 3,000 pre-identified students and has partnered with over 70 schools throughout all 8 wards in Washington, D.C. It runs the largest school Pantry Program in the city, designed as a place where students can discreetly get food and items they need, including age appropriate toiletries and other household items on an as-needed basis.

WASHINGTON, DC, JUNE 10, 2024 - DC Soccer Club and Washington Capital United have agreed to a formal partnership for the 2024-2025 season that will allow the clubs to work closely together to develop and retain the top players within the Washington, DC soccer community. The shared goal of the partnership is to raise the level of club soccer in Washington DC and make teams more competitive. This will be mutually beneficial to both clubs and ensure stability in roster viability and potential growth opportunities with a proven pathway for the top talented players. Working together on this project will allow us to provide an opportunity for WCU to maintain a relationship with players that they have developed at the younger stages, and who now wish to play at a higher level. It would also allow DC Soccer and WCU to promote a true pathway towards a higher-level league to players currently in our clubs and potential new players in the DC area.

Matt Arrington, Former D.C. United Academy Director of Coaching, Joins DC Soccer Club as the New Director of Soccer

DC Soccer Club, DC’s largest youth soccer organization, has hired Matt Arrington as the new Director of Soccer for the club.

WASHINGTON, DC, MAY 21, 2024 - DC Soccer Club, DC’s largest youth soccer organization, has hired Matt Arrington as the new Director of Soccer for the club. Arrington comes to the club after leading the DC United Academy as its Director of Coaching and brings collegiate and professional playing experience, and a high level of coaching, director, and administrative experience into the role.

Born in Washington, DC, and raised in Bethesda, Md., Arrington began his soccer journey playing for DC Soccer Club (formerly DC Stoddert) before playing DI college soccer at George Mason University. He went on to play professionally in Italy with San Paolo Ostiense and ASD Pro Calcio Cecchina. During his time working with the Academy, six players signed homegrown contracts with the first team and eight players made their professional debuts with Loudon United. Matt won the U16 MLS Next Cup Championship in his first year as the Director of Coaching.

DC Soccer Club Executive Director Greg Andrulis said, “Matt Arrington joins DC Soccer Club at an exciting time in its journey. His career has been spent working at the highest levels of our sport with players, coaches, and managers at the professional and youth levels. His dedication to player development both on and off the field are values we celebrate at our club. Arrington holds several coaching licenses, including his USSF “A” license, and is currently completing the Elite Formation Coaching License from the French Football Federation (FFF)--one of the most highly regarded and rigorous coaching courses in the world. He has worked in different roles at various levels throughout his coaching career that spans over a decade: coaching collegiately as an assistant for the men’s soccer program at Howard University, working as a first-team scout for the Seattle Sounders in the MLS, coaching at the high school level and founding his own soccer training/development company.

As Director of Soccer, Arrington will be responsible for overseeing the introduction and implementation of the DC Soccer Way to Play to all of our soccer constituents. By introducing a game model with all of its components, there will be a logical vehicle for the development of the foundational concepts of our style of play. A club-wide curriculum for travel, recreation, and player development programs will ensure a developmental pathway for all of our players. By embracing the importance of Community, Commitment, and Culture, Matt will have an impact both internally as he shapes the club's soccer culture, and externally as he works in the DC community to provide additional opportunities for players and families in the DC area.

“I'm very excited to help lead the DC Soccer Club in my role and work closely with the DC soccer community,” said Arrington. “DCSC provides an amazing platform for thousands of players in Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas that I'm thrilled to be a part of. WASHINGTON, DC, FEBRUARY 1, 2024 - DC Soccer Club has been named a 2024 project Play Champion. Project Play is an initiative of the Aspen Institute that develops, shares, and mobilizes knowledge that helps build healthy communities through sports. On May 15, DC Soccer Club will be honored on stage with other Champions at the annual Project Play Summit in Baltimore. Project Play Champions are organizations aligned with Project Play's 8 strategies to enhance accessibility and improve quality in youth sports. Recipients are recognized for their innovative commitment to building healthier communities through sport.

DC Soccer was selected to be a Project Play Champion for its commitment to improving accessibility for families and by helping to bring communities together with the collaboration of the DC Winter League. This past winter, DCSC initiated the joint effort of several soccer clubs in the city to offer competitive games that cut down on travel by keeping all games local to the District. As part of the initiative, all clubs agreed to a set of principles to promote a positive experience for players to have fun in a low-pressure environment while focusing on teamwork and sportsmanship. As a result of this collaboration, we increased city-wide, social interaction between players of various socio-economic backgrounds and decreased the stress of long travel time for competition. This experience has opened a new pathway for DC youth soccer clubs to work together in order to provide an accessible, positive environment for Washingtonian youth soccer players.

DC Soccer Club will carry on with its commitment to the principles of Project Play to expand access to youth soccer players and will seek to build on the innovation of the Winter League.

As a committed Project Play champion, DC Soccer Club will participate in Project Play’s Washington DC State of Play report by helping to collect data through youth surveys. State of Play reports are the Aspen Institute’s annual analysis of national trends in the delivery of youth sports activities.

Former MLS Goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra Joins DC Soccer Club as the New Director of Goalkeeping

DC Soccer Club, DC’s largest youth soccer organization, has hired former Major League Soccer and DC United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra as the new Director of Goalkeeping.

WASHINGTON- DC Soccer Club, DC’s largest youth soccer organization, has hired former Major League Soccer and DC United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra as the new Director of Goalkeeping. Dykstra brings high-level playing experience, both collegiately and professionally, and high-level youth coaching experience from the local club area.

Born in Hawaii and raised in Northern Virginia, Dykstra played collegiately at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned All-CAA honors twice and earned high academic conference honors as a student-athlete. He made his MLS debut with the Chicago Fire in 2010 and went on to play for several other clubs in USL and MLS, including DC United, Sporting Kansas City, and Colorado Rapids.

Dykstra has spent the last several years coaching youth travel soccer at various competitive levels. He came to DC Soccer Club after working as the Director of Goalkeeping at Virginia Development Academy (VDA), which competes in the ECNL (National League). Before that post, he worked as the goalkeeper director and sports performance director at Prince William Soccer Inc (PWSI).

DC Soccer Club Executive Director Greg Andrulis said, “We are thrilled to add Andrew Dykstra to the DC Soccer family. The modern game requires specific coaching for this important position. With Andrew, we have a professional coach with high-level experience that he has included in our developmental program for our goalkeepers and coaching staff.”

“I am very excited to join DC Soccer Club as the Director of Goalkeeping,” said Dykstra. “I look forward to this new era for the goalkeeping program at DCSC. I am excited to work with a club with boundless potential along with all the coaches and staff. I am most thrilled to work under DC Soccer Club’s Executive Director Greg Andrulis. He has a very similar background to me and understands my vision for the club with the goalkeeper program.” said Dykstra.

Dykstra will be charged with implementing a curriculum for the goalkeepers in the club and leading a staff of goalkeeper coaches.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - DC Soccer Club is pleased to announce it has been accepted to compete in the ECNL Regional League beginning in the 2024-2025 season. The league’s expansion into the city gives DC Soccer Club players access to a higher competitive level and a pathway for elite development within the structure of the prestigious ECNL.

“I want to express my sincere appreciation to all the ECNL league directors and club directors who have supported our club and made it possible for us to compete against elite clubs in the regional league,” said DC Soccer Club Technical Director Edu De Souza. “Our main goal is to provide the best opportunities for all players in the DC area to compete at a high level. We are extremely excited to get started!”

The ECNL is the premier youth soccer league in the nation, managing and operating both a regional and national platform. The ECNL Regional League provides elite competition within a closer geographical area and provides access to national events and showcases, with opportunities for post-season advancement at the regional and national stages.

At this stage in our travel program’s development, our coaches and players are ready for a league that provides enhanced experiences and competition. DC Soccer Club’s top U13-U19 boys and girls teams will compete in the ECNL Regional League Virginia in the North Conference beginning next fall, and the U11-U12 top teams will compete in the league as pre-ECNL. The ECNL is sanctioned by US Club Soccer and offers a State Cup competition, with winners advancing to regional and national cup championships. ECNL RL Virginia is coming off a strong 2023 campaign with its member clubs winning two national championships and two more being national finalists.

Tryouts for all DCSC travel teams, including ECNL RL teams, will take place this spring and the schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
